Giselle, one of the most famous ballets of the Romantic period, is a timeless story of love, betrayal and redemption. Originally choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot in 1841, the ballet with music by Adolphe Adam tells the tragic story of Giselle, a young peasant girl who falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a commoner. When she discovers his deception and his previous engagement, she dies of lovesickness, only to rise again as Wili - a forest spirit. In the second act, Giselle overcomes her pain and protects Albrecht from the vengeful Wilis, who try to dance men to their deaths, and finally grants him forgiveness before disappearing into the afterlife.
In this unique reinterpretation, choreographer Saeed Hani, in collaboration with Mexican choreographer Melva Olivas Durazo, opens up a new perspective on Giselle by combining ballet, contemporary dance, nude art and visual art to create a profound experience. This production with 18 dancers and a live orchestra will be performed in October 2025 at the renowned Festival CulturaUNAM and the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico City. The fusion of classical and contemporary movement, live music and visual elements will breathe new life into this much-loved piece, offering audiences an emotive and visually powerful performance.
